Making it a product, not a prototype

A board that works on the bench still has to become a product. It has to fit, mount, connect, stay within temperature, survive shipping and handling and whatever its environment does to it, and be manufacturable by somebody who was not in the room when it was designed.

FormForge covers mechanical CAD, enclosures and packaging, mechanisms and assemblies, and the connector and cable interfaces where electrical and mechanical design meet. Thermal management is treated as a design input rather than a late correction — heatsinking, airflow, and conduction paths worked out while the board layout can still change in response.

For rugged applications the constraints tighten: size, weight, and power budgets that cannot move; vibration and shock environments; sealing; and materials chosen for the conditions rather than for convenience. That is familiar territory.

Design for manufacture and fabrication preparation close the loop — drawings and models a shop can quote and build from, tolerances that reflect the process rather than the ideal, and prototypes made to find the problems before a production run does.

The advantage of mechanical integration sitting alongside the electronics and firmware is that the trade-offs get made once, together. Enclosure volume, thermal headroom, connector placement, and board outline are all the same negotiation, and it goes badly when it happens across three vendors and a schedule.
